County Conservation District The
Conservation District is a county-wide public agency created in 1971. The
District protects vital natural areas through public and private ownership
and restoration initiatives. The District currently owns 11,000 acres,
including 13 Illinois State Nature Preserves.
Glacial
Park This 2,806 remnant of glacial
activity contains gravel kames, restored prairies, oak savannahs and
wetlands including Kettle Bog and Lost Valley Marsh. There are miles of
hiking and cross-country ski trails as well as two canoe landings.
McHenry
County Prairie Trail The
Prairie Trail runs 12.9 miles from the Kane County line in Algonquin to the
Wisconsin state line. A former railroad bed, the trail is paved from
Algonquin to Ringwood and provides hiking and biking. The 7.5-mile northeast
extension, from Ringwood to the state line, is gravel and is open to hiking,
bicycling and horseback riding. Used for snowmobiling during the winter
season.
